With the devastatingly violent murder of a New England father by another father at the local ice rink during ice hockey practice for 10 year old boys, America has been forced to reexamine the role of parents in their children's sporting events.

Today, more than ever parents are more likely to humiliate their children, watching parents and other children  as they play sports, whether it is soccer, baseball, basketball or ice hockey. These parents are often times threatening and violent to referees and coaches when they feel that the game isn't going "right for them".

This national discussion puts a spotlight on how parents are taking the fun out of their children's sports and putting violence, poor sportsmanship, and rage in it's place.  Instead of having fun and learning about working with other children, kids are learning that it is okay to scream, curse, hit and even murder when  playing a game.

Coaching Kids For Dummies by Rick Wolfe hopes to educate parents about the dos and don't s of good sportsmanship and how to be role model for their children.  Wolfe's book hopes that parents will see that their behavior undercuts and even demeans what children are trying to accomplish- to have fun.

Hopefully with the help of Dr. Wolfe, self reflection, and an open dialogue with other parents kids will be able to be kids and have fun playing sports.

Did you know that 6.5 million boys and 3.5 million girls are involved in fights every year in America? Plus, 4.5 million kids are threatened with bodily harm each year. The American Justice Department says this month 1 out of every 4 kids will experience severe abuse from another youth. It's time to do something about it!

Real Boys:
Rescuing Our Sons from the Myths of Boyhood
by William S. Pollack, Mary Pipher

What are little boys made of? In Real Boys: Rescuing Our Sons from the Myths of Boyhood author and psychologist William Pollack presents his findings from almost 20 years of clinical work and his recently completed study examining contemporary boyhood and the ways boys manifest their social and emotional disconnection through anger and violence. There's a code of boy behavior, Pollack says--an unspoken "boy code" that teaches boys how to act and demands that they cover up their emotions.
